Going for a swim in a frigid pond during sub-freezing temperatures is stupid at the best of times, but doing it at 3 AM, in the midst of pitch blackness, really takes the dumbassery cake. Unfortunately for a North Carolina couple and their 12-year-old daughter, that lesson was learned too late.

The strange event took place last weekend when the three, along with several other family members, decided to go for a swim at their local pond at 3 AM, despite the air temperature running at below 30 degrees and the water temperature sitting at a stiff 43 degrees. Why they made that fateful decision isn’t known, but the wet romp ended in tragedy, with the couple and their daughter dead, and another family member in hospital recovering from hypothermia.

As the story goes, the winter swimmers made their way to the middle of the pond, where depths reached up to eight feet, before succumbing to a quick loss of body heat and simply drowning. Unless there’s more to the story – and you almost have to hope that there is – this act of foolishness will go down in history, especially given that the bad decision-making abilities of the adults lead to not only their deaths, but the death of a child, as well.

Winter swimming: cold, uncomfortable, pointless, and potentially deadly. You’ve been warned!

Of course there’s more to the story. It’s North Carolina. Chances are religion, moonshine or both played a role.
