High School Fight Club Exposed in California
As the old saying goes: boys will be boys.
That’s the defense of some school administrators who have come under fire for apparently allowing the boys on the school’s varsity baseball team to settle their differences with pre-planned fist fights, making for a high school fight club scandal that has parents up in arms. To make matters worse, rumor has it that school athletic staff may even have encouraged the action.
The fight club was exposed after a local CBS station was sent cell phone video footage of the fights, depicting several students, each wearing boxing gloves, fist fighting in their sports changing room. Each fight appears to be consensual, and rules seem to be followed (i.e. allowing a fighter to his feet when knocked down), making for a generally tame affair compared to some of the violence suffered in our schools of late.
None of the footage shows any member of the school’s staff in the vicinity.
I would suggest considering sanctioning and supervising such activities instead of banning them outright; if the boys are comfortable duking it out with boxing gloves on instead of shooting or stabbing eachother in the schoolyard when it comes to settling differences, parents and school officials alike may want to count their blessings for the outlet, instead of offhandedly condemning it.
In any case, you can bet that there will be lots of delicious, media-friendly fallout from the video itself. Take a look, and let us know what you think in the comments below:
